Private notepad: your notes stay on your device

No account, no cloud, no server holding a copy. A notepad that is private because there is nowhere for your text to go.

Most note apps call themselves private and then ask you to create an account, sync everything to their servers and trust their policy. Classic Notepad takes the simpler route: it never receives your text in the first place. It is a single web page that runs in your browser, and what you type is saved only in your browser's local storage on your own device.

There is no note database. The site has no accounts, no sync and no server-side storage for notes, so there is nothing to leak, subpoena or read on our side.

What "private" means here

The honest limits

Local-only storage is private, but it is not a vault. Anyone who can sit at your unlocked computer and open this browser profile can open the notepad and read what is in it. Notes are not encrypted, and there is no password lock. If you share a computer, use your own user account or a private window, and clear the site data when you are done. Clearing your browser's site data for classicnotepad.com deletes every saved note, which is also the quickest way to wipe the notepad completely.

Because nothing is synced, notes also do not follow you to another browser or device. When you need a note elsewhere, use File › Save to download a .txt copy and move it yourself.

Good uses for a private notepad

A scratch space for text you would rather not paste into a cloud document: a draft message, a list of things to buy, a temporary code or reference number, rough notes from a call, or text you are cleaning up before it goes somewhere else. Because it is plain text with no formatting, it is also a clean place to strip the styling from something you copied.

Frequently asked questions

Is this notepad really private?

Your notes are never uploaded. They live in your browser's local storage on your device, and there is no account or server-side note storage. They are not encrypted, so anyone with access to your browser profile could read them.

Can you read my notes?

No. We never receive them, so there is nothing for us to read.

Does it need an account or login?

No. Open the page and type. There is nothing to register.

How do I delete my notes completely?

Delete the note inside the app, or clear the site data for classicnotepad.com in your browser settings. Clearing site data removes everything the notepad has stored.

Does it work in a private or incognito window?

Yes, but browsers usually discard that window's storage when it closes, so your notes will be gone afterwards. Use File › Save first if you want to keep a copy.
